Ashland County Mining

Do any of my four readers have any information on John P. Congdon and LaPointe Iron Company? This guy appeared at a county board meeting yesterday & basically said that there will be a mine in Ashland County. My limited research indicates that this guy is from the Congdon family in Duluth. He certainly seems confidant. I wonder if SueHank Martinsen is involved with him? It looks like we'll need to do lots of research & lots of organizing if we are going to stop this environmental fiasco. I am always amazed at how words of no environmental damage fall so glibly from the lips of the overly rich. I wonder if there is a Ludlow in this family's background? Maybe not, but will there be one in the future? Mellen, after all, sits in the bottom of a hole.

He gave the same presentation at the Town of Morse Smart Growth meeting (and probably the Town of Anderson in Iron County too). His pitch was that there is a lot of iron ore in these hills but he can't get any of the mining/steel companies interested yet but would like the matter addressed in the Smart Growth Plan. With the huge capital investment in Minnesota and to a lesser extent in Michigan iron ranges, it will be a long time before any serious consideration is given to mining here. I think the State Legislature sent the Smart Grrowth Plan idea the way of Cheney's 7 1/2 shot anyway. We will all be playing harp or the equivalent when they do any mining around Mellen.

I also read somewhere the the definitive proof that the Cheney hunting incident was an accident is that if Cheney really meant to shoot the old guy - he would have shot him in the back. (Cheney's MO dontcha know)
