Father George Votruba, 81, of Rice Lake died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at Our House Assisted Living. He was born April 18, 1929, in Haugen, to George and Martha (Hruska) Votruba.
I hope for the sake of the newly betrothed that this is not a harbinger of the future, at least not the immediate future.

The World Is Getting Warmer

That's a "no shit, Dick Tracy" headline, capiche? An ocean current that runs into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than its been for 2,000 years.
A North Atlantic current flowing into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than for at least 2,000 years in a sign that global warming is likely to bring ice-free seas around the North Pole in summers, a study showed.

Scientists said that waters at the northern end of the Gulf Stream, between Greenland and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, averaged 6 degrees Celsius (42.80F) in recent summers, warmer than at natural peaks during Roman or Medieval times.

"The temperature is unprecedented in the past 2,000 years," lead author Robert Spielhagen of the Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Literature in Mainz, Germany, told Reuters of the study in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

The summer water temperatures, reconstructed from the makeup of tiny organisms buried in sediments in the Fram strait, have risen from an average 5.2 degrees Celsius (41.36F) from 1890-2007 and about 3.4C (38.12F) in the previous 1,900 years.

The findings were a new sign that human activities were stoking modern warming since temperatures are above past warm periods linked to swings in the sun's output that enabled, for instance, the Vikings to farm in Greenland in Medieval times.

"We found that modern Fram Strait water temperatures are well outside the natural bounds," Thomas Marchitto, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of the authors, said in a statement.

The Fram strait is the main carrier of ocean heat to the Arctic.

Of course the dickish deniers will probably say something along the lines of god providing a Northwest Passage, the one that so many died trying to find.  My emphases.

The Chanllenger Disaster

I was sitting at home, nothing new there, & was watching the teevee.  The disaster was all over the news during the day.  The Kid, who about 8 years old at the time, came home & said they had talked about it at school.  It was strange, watching the wispy, white clouds that were what was left of the shuttle, of the people, drift downward.  I remembered sitting on the ground at Devil's Lake State Park here in Wisco having a picnic with my best friend & his then wife.  It was hot, C. was very pregnant & worried if the potato salad was OK in the heat.  That was the day we landed on the moon, fulfilling the promise JFK made years earlier.  I must say, we weren't impressed.  We were in school learning about all kinds of stuff, including the immense problems facing the country & the world.  Vietnam, of course, pollution in women's breast milk, racism in the academy, poverty, & a long losing streak by the Wisco Badger football team.  While I'm fascinated by space, space travel, research, etc., the military clearly took over the space program.  All the secret payloads, etc., sure didn't inspire me to think beyond the planet.  BTW, the potato salad was fine, no one  got sick.

This Is Why Some People Are Great While Others Are Just Good

Valdimir Nabokov won the Nobel Prize for Literature, but that's not all he did in his life.  He was a self taught expert in butterflies, particularly Polyommatus blues. I believe this is a great model of how to live a life.  Part of the trouble with the right wing in America is that not only don't they believe in the obvious - evolution - that have no lives other than that of deniers.  They love to say no & think that is how you govern.

Well, This Sucks

I guess it's time to look for alternatives. It's too bad that these companies have decided to give up the fight. I think the market for organics has grown, but now I wonder how any farm will be able to claim the organic label. Money changes everything, indeed. Too bad.
The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must." - Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011

In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto's Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America's organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it's time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for "coexistence" with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack.

My emphasis.

I did not watch the speech.  I listened to Thom Hartmann yesterday & I'm starting to hear something pretty creepy, namely, the refrain of would you rather have McCain?  & even for 2012, do you want Palin? or Huckabee (not likely since the $3 million home in FL is in the way)? or you name the low-life ReThug.  Maybe, just maybe, we should all vote for the worst ReThug in the bunch.  Let America reach rock bottom sooner, rather than later.  Just look at Wisco, my home state.  The ReThugs are in complete control - legislative, governor, Supreme Court (the best that money can buy, literally).  The stupid governor is now demanding that he should be able to tell the agencies in charge of implementing the law how to implement the law - every agency.  He will probably get that authority.  He is on his way to becoming our dear leader.  Things are worse than I ever imagined they would be.  I figured the brain addled Reagan (red Ron, Jr.'s new book) was an anomaly.  All those years as a particularly bad B-actor paid off in spades for him, & the country suffered, but we would be able to overcome.  I don't believe that anymore.  In fact, I'm starting to think about removing myself completely from the political, what's the point?  This isn't original, see Norwegianity.

Speaking of that blog, read  this.
No comment on the SOTU. Nothing Obama says or does is of any interest to me. I may hav(sic) slipped back into my politic ways, but I do not intend to waste my time or yours with that which matters little, all having been settled in a boardroom  or club long before being debated in Congress.
I strongly suspect that nothing the Democrats ever do or say again will much impress me. They are not the smug swine of the right, but in every other regard are as unacquainted with truth and the  right path as any tax protesting shirker on the right.

Jack LaLanne, R.I.P.

He's no longer juiced up, he's dead.  Maybe we will all be spared his juicing infomercials now, at least for awhile.  He may, like Bob Ross, make a comeback after the grave.  I suppose a mashup of his juicing highlights could be interesting.  Or not.

Mr. Sam Sheilds - Second Interception Seals The Deal - SUPER BOWL Here We Come

Packers in victory formation & win the game & are in the SUPER BOWL!!!!

Jesus On A Cracker, Ack Ack

Bears score a quick, 81 seconds, TD.  21-14.  4:43 left in the game.

328 Pounds Of Beauty

21-7 thanks to Mr. Raji who just had a pick-six.  Whew, just what I needed.  Just a suggestion to Mr. Raji, please hand onto the ball a bit more the next time, putting on the belt will wait.

Good grief, a third string QB takes the Bears in for a TD.  Time for a long TD drive like we had last week.

End Of The 3rd Quarter - Same Score

14-0.  The Packers better do some scoring soon because letting the Bears hang around is not a great strategy.  On the plus side, the Bears are on their third string QB.  I'm not sure what that means since I don't even know who this guy is, much less whether he's a good player or not.

But it's still going to be 4th & 15 yards to go.

Big Effing ACK

Refs getting a bit loose.  I suppose the only good news is that the Bears' QB Cutler is out with a knee injury.  This new guy, we'll see.  So far it's not looking good. 8:40 left in the 3rd quarter.

3 & Out For The Bears To Start The Second Half

The Bears have not converted a 3rd down yet.  I wonder why Blackie the Wonderdog picked the Bears?  Maybe it has something to do with this?

14-0 At Halftime

The Packers are beating the crap out of the Bears, yet it's only 14-0.  That quirky interception didn't help.  I believe we would have scored again.  The brats, potato salad, ripple chips (with sea salt!) & a Sprecher's Cherry Soda were great - a nice little tailgate party here in coldH2Owiville.  I will say that Mrs. coldH2Owi looks pretty cute in her green Packer's hat.  She also made the picnic/tailgate spread.  Oh, yeah, the refs seemed to have regained their footing, as it is.

Great Defensive Stand

1:52 left in the 1st half.

Mr. Starks Scores His First NFL TD

No. 44 is doing great so far.  14-0.

Great Punt

Time for a safety.

That drive started out great.  Now a punt, but Hester is tackled after 3 yards.  I'm getting suspicious of the refs.  Rogers took a couple of hits that series.  No flags.

Bears Punt On First Possession

Big run by Stark.
Clifton hurt on TD run by Rogers.  Oh, Oh.

All Right - Rogers Scores On A Run.

NFL - Excellent Condition For The Field?

Not so much.  Packer slips on opening kick-off.  Only a 14 yard return.
Two great passes & a good run.

13:00 left.

Paul Mirengoff Once Called Me A Moron

I was impressed that I even made it to the radar scree of the dicks at Power(Bullshit)line.  Anyway, Mirengoff 's clear racism & backward thinking has finally come back to bite him in his fat ass.  I couldn't be happier.  The lesson here?  I guess it's don't fuck with the creator or the Yaqui. Here's something Mirengoff lacks - a heart.  Of course, he does become breathless when thinking about soccer.  While I certainly respect the rest of the world's fantastic support for soccer, I find it is only less boring than baseball.  However, like golf (without Tiger), I find the most restful naps come in conjunction with watching & listening to those games.

For me there is only traveling on paths that have heart, on any path that may have heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length. And there I travel looking, looking, breathlessly.

Dare I Say That The Market Has A Moral Base?

Well, no. but sodium thiopental is the means for state sponsored murder.  I'm glad Hospira will no longer produce it Kudos to Italy for really living up to its belief that capital punishment is no way to increase human dignity.

The decision by Hospira of Lake Forest., Ill., was prompted by demands from Italy, which does not have capital punishment, that no sodium thiopental - which the company had planned to make at its plant outside Milan - be used for executions, officials said.

Why America NeedsTo Renounce Torture, Assassination, & Just Plain Murder In Place Of Real Foreign Policy

I remember this, even though I was 12 years old & living in a small town in northern Wisco.  I did read the local paper & the Sunday Milwaukee Journal (it was a pretty good paper back then, not so much now).  I watched the teevee news & actually listened to AM radio (mostly to tune in a Chicago station to listen to an Ali bout, for free!)  In the intervening years I read a lot about this man & other men & women in Africa, good people murdered with the direct help of America.  & to top this off, I was watching some dumbass hunting show yesterday & this woman host referred to Africa as the dark continent.  She might as well have said what she meant - the darky continent.  It is so frustrating & humiliating to keep seeing this being said in America in the 21st century.  oh well, we have our guns & our version of a warrior god.

Civility At Its Best - CA Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (ReThug-Asshat)

Minuteman my ass.  They had honor, at the least & one could really ride a horse & make silver things.

Scott Walker Is An Asshole Part 2

It's funny, isn't it?  If Walker gets his complete way, & it looks that way since Wisco voters acted studpidly in the last election, we will be the Mississippi of the north.  & look how great Mississippi is:

Median Family Income: $39,319.00 (Ranked 50th)  -  Wisco: $55,780.00 (ranked 18th)

Nest Egg Index: 85.48 (Ranked 50th)  -  Wisco: 107.41 (ranked 9th)

Education (% of students above national average - math): 1%  (ranked 49th)  -  Wisco: 7% (ranked 8th)

Education-Best Educated: -14.31 (ranked 49th, only AZ is worse, hmmm)  -  Wisco: 8.45 (ranked 8th)

Health: 18.43 (ranked 49th)  -  Wisco: 8.07  (ranked 14th)

I think y'all can get the drift.  This is where Scott Walker & Company are taking us.  Kill high speed rail, kill biomass heating plant.  We're open for business all right.

Interesting Read If You Are Interested In Economics

Bradford DeLong.    I like this statement:

Perhaps the collapse of the union movement means that politicians nowadays tend not to see anybody who speaks for the people in the bottom half of the American income distribution.

I would, of course, say: Doh!

Good Riddance

He has been no help & the decision by Al Gore to pick him as VP was a poor one.

& They Are Going To Make Him A Saint?

John Paul II died in 2005.  Yet, in 1997, the Vatican, which at last look, was run by John Paul II, told the Irish bishops to shut the fuck up about priests molesting/raping/abusing children.  I guess they had to lower the bar a bit in order to sneak this awful human being into the saint club.

I'm Not Sure If I Will Be Able To Go On

Packers Did Not Punt Once Tonight, Not Once

One more to go & then the Super Bowl.  The refs were very fair, good, consistent tonight.  I salute them.

Another Field Goal

48-21.  Less than two minutes left.  Packers look real good.  Better than Chicago or Seattle.  We'll see.  The Bear & Packers split the season series with the Packers winning in the last game of the season & therefore made the playoffs.  Seattle, well, for a team with a less than .500 winning percentage, they looked good last week.

Barely? Barely? It's Three More Points Than The Last One

Sometimes I just can't stand the announcers on the teevee.  45-21.

OK - Ack Ack

Ball hits left upright.  Refs looking shakier.

Minor Ack

42-21.  Onside kick failed.

42-14 Dirty birds? Heh.

Rogers runs for a TD.  So far, I've hardly had to ack at all.  Plus the refs seem unusually honest, at least up to now.  We'll see how it all turns out.  It's looking fine so far.

Halftime.  Nice pick six at the end of the half for the Packers.

Note To NFL Rules Committee

Make the slugging of footballs out of a player's arms illegal.  If the slugger missed & hit the player instead of the ball, wouldn't that warrant an expulsion?  OK, the Packers score & tie the game in the second quarter.  Still, ban the way the players cause fumbles.

Talk About Your Luck Of The Polish, That's Polish, Not Polish

I call bullshit.  However, I could claim that my miracle, if it comes true, could be laid, as it were, at the feet of the dead, yes, Virginia, he's still dead, just like Franco.  My miracle is that the Jets beat he cheating, low-life Patriots.

More Crap From The Right

This is one loon Maine no longer needs.  It's much like a local businessman exploiting people of color & then having his surrogates claim it would be impossible for him to be racist, he has a black son-in-law.  Yeah, right.

LePage said, "Tell them to kiss my butt."

Correcto Again!

When, dear loyal five (yes, 5!) readers, when, will the world see me as the all-knowing one.  & this guy is considered a saint by the right-wing dopesters - well, yeah.  We have been in steady decline since Reagan was elected & he immediately fired all the air traiffic controllers.  & now, a family member says his father's brain was full of holes.  Doesn't say much about the federal doctors at the Walter Reed complex.

I'm Getting Too Old

Captain America is really 70 years old?  Sheesh.  I may not sell my bike after all.  It may keep me younger.

Accident My Ass

This is revenge for that damned horse jumping, eight million fox hounds chasing, & humans dressing up real silly. Good for the fox. You should note that the fox just gave the human a leg wound, talk about being civil.

Good News For Steelhead

The steelhead in the John Day River will have less cow shit to deal to dodge. Looks like the ranchers won't get anymore free (or should I say hay on our dime) grass. Now, if I could absolutely understand the difference between a Steehhead, a Rainbow Trout, & salmon. I mean, I know of & what the difference salmon species are, but I don't understand that some consider the Steelhead to be a salmon since it moves out into salt water before returning home to spawn. & like the Atlantic Salmon, the Steelhead doesn't die after spawning. Anyway, I'm happy about this, although I'm sure I will never actually fish that river.

Yeah, This Global Warming Stuff Is Just Tree Huggers Forming Their Own Religion & Socialists Out To Destroy The American Way Of Screwing Anyone Who Gets In The Way Of Getting What Belongs To Me

The facts are inconvient.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday that last year was tied as the planet's hottest on record.

Surface temperatures in 2010 were tied with 2005: both years, up approximately 1.12 degrees Fahrenheit over the 20th century's average.

Surface temperatures for the Earth's oceans were also up by 0.88 degrees Fahrenheit in 2010, once again tying with 2005, this time for the third warmest year on record.
They also cited the Global Historical Climatology Network, which found that 2010 was also the wettest year on record. They added that the Pacific ocean saw fewer hurricanes than any year since the mid-1960s, while the Atlantic ocean had an "extremely active" year with 19 different named storms.
& the ReThug/Palin noise machine is out in full throat.  Get a load of this moron:
I am over rawstory, com. Truth is one thing, agendized bullshit (Al Goreism) is completely another. If you are stupid or uninformed enough to buy into this shit please get smarter or get the fuck off my planet.
Nice, eh?  I agree with a commenter down the line & wonder whether this moron was homeschooled in a John Haggee run household.  Jeez Louise. Oh year, Al Gore should have been President of these United States & I don't think he is, presently, fat.

Time For American Students, Of All Age Groups, To Learn & Follow Their European Brothers & Sisters

& the Bristish students could show the way & manner of reacting to what's happening to America.  The same the betrayal of the young, the independent, the left, the normal everyday person is going on here.  & now, with his Wall St. buddies President Obama is abandoning the middle class, or, I should say, what is left of America's middle class.

Like Obama, Clegg was an inspirational, out-of-the-box candidate who energized a generation of young voters. Although the U.S. president's ratings have also fallen sharply, Clegg appears to be facing a far stronger backlash, especially among students.

"I supported the Lib Dems. I campaigned for them amongst my friends and handed out leaflets," said Rachel Sullivan, 20, an English literature major at Oxford who has taken part in the demonstrations. "But now I feel that I was championing a childish cause, a cause for people who were not honest about what they stood for. . . . There are many students who will never vote Lib Dem again."

My emphasis.

This Should Turn Out To Be A Help To Our Democracy, Such As It Is

Of course, I'm not holding my breath, yet.

Dear President Obama

One could argue that at a moment like like platitudes would be OK, soothing words actually help, but one would be wrong.

A Million Homes Here, A Million Homes There

& the banks are just loved by the people who rule us.  Who would ever have thought that Americans would allow this to happen?
The bleakest year in foreclosure crisis has only just begun. Lenders are poised to take back more homes this year than any other since the U.S. housing meltdown began in 2006. About 5 million borrowers are at least two months behind on their mortgages and more will miss payments as they struggle with job losses and loans worth more than their home's value, industry analysts forecast.

Here We Go

A couple of Wisco morons introduced a bill that would require every Wisco citizen to present a voter ID in order to vote in any election.  These two big thinkers are ReThug Rep. Jeff Stone (Asshat-Greenfield0 & Sen. Joe Leigham (Asshat-Sheboygan).  This comes from a email from One Wisconsin Now & they are starting the Voter Protection Task Force.  Go here:

You will be able to get involved in protecting every Wisco citizen's right to vote.

Stuff like this just goes to show how much bullshit poured out of Scott Walker's mouth during the campaign.  Lots of jobs created with this bill.

Cookie Gilchrist, R.I.P.

He's dead.  I faintly remember this man.  Clearly, he is someone who should be remembered.

Another List, Another Day, & Another DINO

TPM has the latest list of foaming at the mouth, hillbilly gun nuts.  Including the politically brave Manchin of West Virginia.  BTW, he is the only one listed who claims to be a member of the Democratic Party.  Someone in West Virginia had better help him bone up on the reality of "methaphors."  Or, maybe what a metaphor is.

Amur Tiger Time

Man, these are beautiful, magnificent creatures. It's too bad that they just might go extinct in the wild in my lifetime, which I don't think will be that much longer since I'm already a geezer almost, I officially become a geezer in May. I don't mean to say that I'm about to expire, but that there are just a few hundred Amur tigers left in the wild & there are a lot of Chinese citizens who want bigger peckers, Russian oligarchs who want to roll around on a tiger skin in front of a fireplace, & the biggest problem of all, a continuing environmental holocaust that dims the future of the Amur tiger, among many other creatures.

Ugly List

Hullabaloo has a list of right-wing terrorism that is unsettling.  I didn't know of many of these events & I sort of pride myself with keeping up on stuff like this.  Of course, it would be a crime against civility to bring it up.  Here is the first thing on the list:

-- July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how "liberals" are "destroying America," walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.

A Canadian View Of Palin's First Success, Yes I Know, I'm Spewing Hate, Well, Deal With It

The first news of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and at least 18 others carried all the ingredients anyone might need to admit that this is where the wild, paranoid side of political discourse within America has inevitably led.

The authors continue:

And yet the American television talk shows Sunday refused to acknowledge the obvious, failed to press on with the fundamentally revised conversation so clearly needed. How to pull the nation back from this brink of a permanently poisoned civil society?

Instead, anyone who dared implicate in this tragedy Sarah Palin's "reload" mantra, or the cross-hairs imagery employed in Republican election ads, was swatted down on the air by conservatives assuring that we don't know why Jared Loughner did what he did. It "cheapens" the tragedy to want to contextualize it, they said. Loughner seemed to be mentally unbalanced, they noted, as if that was some sort of total explanation that granted absolution to what America's political culture has become.

Go read the whole thing, it's good. My emphasis.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (S-CA) Has A Good Idea

To bad the ReThugs won't let it go anywhere.  The deficit?  What deficit?

The Conviction & Sentencing Of That Rat DeLay

I'm happy that the criminal Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison.  I'm angry that the judge then let him out while he appeals.  Once again, if you are rich & white, you can manipulate our justice system.  DeLay may be free for years, according to the prosecutors.  That is just not fair & it is not justice.  He should begin serving his 3 year sentence right now, just like a normal person, or a poor person, or a person of color.
Senior Judge Pat Priest sentenced him to the three-year term on the conspiracy charge. He also sentenced him to five years in prison on the money laundering charge but allowed DeLay to accept 10 years of probation instead of more prison time.
DeLay was immediately taken into custody, but Priest granted a request from his attorneys that he be released on a $10,000 bond pending appeal once he is processed at the county jail. Prosecutors said it could mean DeLay will be free for months or even years as his appeal makes it through the Texas court system.
I sure hope that I get the choice of 10 years of probation instead of more prison time.  That vaunted Texas hard-ass justice is apparently just for black & Latinos.  I wonder if the judge spent time in a hot tub, smoking cigars & sipping the finest whiskey with DeLay, the bug killer.  Sadly, I wonder how many lives DeLay ruined by the power he wielded.  My emphasis.

Packers intercept in the end zone - A DAGGER!  21-16!  We won.  Aaron Rogers wins his first playoff game. Plus the rookie Mr. Starks had 123 yards or so rushing, something the Packers had a difficult time of all year.  Well, there, relative live blogging of a sporting event.  We beat Atrios' team, not that he'd admit to it. A win on the road, good news.  Time to hit the basement & turn some wood.

Triple Ack, Like Ack, Ack, Ack

Eagles score a TD, but fail at the 2 point conversion.  Packers still lead by 5, 21-16.  4:02 left in the game.  What the hell?  They get to try it again, since it is not a loss of down penalty.  Now the Eagles are on their 12 yard line.  The receiver reestablished after going out of bounds.  Ha, Vick gets rushed & sort of under hands it into the ground.  Bad news, maybe for Vick, he rolled his left ankle & left the field limping.  Kolb warming up.

Wow & Yay

Akers misses a short field goal.  That's his second of the day.  It was fourth & 1.  I like Andy Reid, since his days with the Packers.  I'm glad he listened to the statisticians & tried the field goal. 13:05 left in the game.

End Of The Third Quarter & The Commercials Are Blasting Out Twice As Loud As The Game

It's still 21-10.  Let's hope it stays that way.  I though the damn government did something about the loud commercials?

Very Good, Packers

&, amazingly for the Packers, it was a run that scored the 3rd TD.  It's now 21-10.  l7:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

Double Ack!!

Rogers fumbles, Eagles score TD on pass from dog killer.  13:50 left in the third quarter. 14-10.

Why didn't they call a timeout?  At least try a field goal.  It's half-time.  At least we won't have to put up with those completely stupid half-time college bowl game "spectaculars".

Good Grief

Jones drops a perfect TD pass.  Yikes.  31 seconds left.

Packers up 14 points to Zero points for the dog murders team.  So far so good.  After that criminal, pathetic Nixon, I'm just not into the whole notion of second chances.  5:21 left in the first half.

Dem Rep Giffords shot in head in Az. Sarah Palin had put CROSSHAIRS/ BULLSEYE on Giffords on her website! OUTRAGE!

When Rep Giffords voted in favor of health care bill, her office in Tucson was attacked & vandalized.

Palin "set gun sights on 20 Dems (including Giffords)." Palin site now seems 2 b 2 taking down crosshairs map!

In 2009, another gun nut showed up where Rep Giffords was speaking (at another Safeway) & dropped his gun

Giffords opponent held June event 2 "Shoot a Fully Automatic M16" to "Get on Target" & "Remove Gabrielle Giffords"

When Palin put crosshairs on a map w/ Rep. Giffords & 19 other Dem congressmen/women, she urged followers to "reload" & "aim" for Democrats.

RT @RichardKimNYC Giffords was impt brave ally in fight to defeat 2006 AZ anti-gay marriage initiative. i covered in brief

Stunning admission by Tucson sheriff: Arizona "a mecca" of hate & bigotry which unhinges the unbalanced Wow.

Thanks, Keith, 4 ur powerful Special Comment just now & 4 mentioning Glenn Beck's violent fantasies:

Christina Green was the 9yr old killed. She was born on 9/11. Was on student council & only girl on baseball team.

If a Detroit Muslim put a map on the web w/crosshairs on 20 pols, then 1 of them got shot, where would he b sitting right now? Just asking.

More On Palin's First Success, Now She Has 19 To Go - I Sincerely Want You To Know I Am Not Spewing Hate, It's Just The Fact, Ma'am

Listen to John Boner, (ReThug-Asshat), talke about us. Note that he doesn't say the House or the American people. He apparently wants to continue the hateful language & action. What did these morons expect.  Remember Palin wants you to reload.

The new House speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, in an early Sunday appearance in his hometown of West Chester, decried the attack and said it was reminder that public service “comes with a risk.” Mr. Boehner urged prayers for Ms. Giffords and the other victims and also told his House colleagues to persevere in fulfilling their oath of office. “This inhuman act should not and will not deter us. No act, no matter how heinous,” he said, “must be allowed to stop us.”

In an emotional news conference late Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik (D) denounced the nation's vitriolic political climate and noted Arizona's part in the rancor after a controversial crackdown on illegal immigration.

"The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous, and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital," Dupnik said. "We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

The fiery rhetoric that has taken hold in politics, Dupnik said, "may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

Our National Media - Right On Top Of An Emerging Educational Problem

For crying out loud, this is news?  It shows, IMO, just how insulated the media has become.  I knew this 45 years ago & I wasn't even the Salutatorian of my high school class.  I'm purposely leaving outt Valedictorian for obvious reasons. Stop that snickering over there in the peanut gallery.  Thanks.

Josh Marshall.

Arizona has been ground zero for the guns and threats agitation from the right over the last two years. And as an example of the atmosphere in the state of late, back this summer her Tea Party opponent Jesse Kelly held a "Target for Victory" fundraiser in which contributors could help "remove" Giffords from office by "shoot[ing] a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.

More On Palin's First Success

NYT mentions Palin's website as well.  The news about Ms. Giffords, however, is lousy.  One wonders about these "through and through" brain traumas.

Dr. Peter Rhee said that she had been shot once in the head, “through and through,” with the bullet going through her brain.

“I can tell you at this time, I am very optimistic about her recovery,” Dr. Rhee said in a news conference. “We cannot tell what kind of recovery but I’m as optimistic as it can get in this kind of situation.”

An official with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that six people had been killed and 18 wounded in the shooting, including a federal judge, John Roll, who had been involved in immigration cases and had previously received death threats. Among the six dead was a child about 9 years old, the hospital confirmed.

During the fall campaign, Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, posted a controversial map on her Facebook page depicting spots where Democrats were running for re-election; those Democrats were noted by crosshairs symbols like those seen through the scope of a gun. Ms. Giffords was among those on Ms. Palin’s map.

Demmocratic Congresswoman Shot In Head, Sarah Palin Had This Congresswoman Depicted With A Cross-hairs Across Her Head

Hmmm, could this be the first of many?  In fact, Palin listed 20 Congress members in her "takeback20" campaign.  Each of these 20, including Gabrielle Giffords, had a cross-hairs across their faces.  I was unable to connect to the "takeback20" website.  Surprise, surprise.  On Palin's Facebook page you can click to this comment:

My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

What a fucking hypocrite. What she wanted happened & she has the fucking gall to say she is praying for the woman & for peace? Just goddamned great.  You know, I think I will just spew some more hate - I hope Sarah Palin becomes such a small asterisk in American history she will replace Millard Fillmore.  Sorry Millard, you actually were elected after all.  & I'll bet you didn't have someone draw pictures of your enemies & then have them draw a gun bead on their foreheads.  I'll try & think of a more appropriate nobody to compare Palin with.  Hate, hate, yeah sure you neo-Nazis.

Looking Out Into A Sunny, Very Cold Morning, I, Of Course, Run Across A Truth Like This

mf has a great post/essay on one person's understanding that all is impermanent. Along with any sense of responsibility from the government, i.e., us (theoretically, I know), he saw how bogus the social contract was/is in a country that, as a matter of policy, respects free markets more than people.

I could no longer convince myself that what I witnessed was an anomaly and not the way the world worked. When all of your assumptions about life and society, even those o, ne mocked (religion, the government) were proved to be made of thin tissue that could not stand up to the flood waters, when confronted with all of the lies required to live as a decent, respectable human being in this place and time, it was more than my mind could handle. I struggled to assemble some new organizational scheme, some way to make sense of the world and myself.

It's going to get worse, people, maybe, since I'm butchering up a button buck road kill today, not much blood, but plenty of knives.

Arizona - Is This America's Future?

Possibly. I resent this ReThug Horne criticizing Pedagogy of the Oppressed.*  This is a great book about education, or as the case  may be, the lack of education.  I'm telling you Jim Harrison,** you better move out of this asshole state sooner rather than later. It's a sad thing, this hatred of anyone who is non-white, or chooses to see reality as it is & then chooses to do something about it.  We Dirty Fucking Hippies are right, have been right all along, but we have chosen, like our intellectual & practical forebears to help people get healthier, help people to become happier, help people realize what their brains & body can do, make sure everyone has decent housing, safe food, clean air & water, unemployment insurance, Social Security, Medicare, smooth roads, sewers, & weekends.  All that means, of course, is that we did stuff rather than opt to make billions or climb the power ladder by stabbing our friends, foes, & family in the back.
*You can buy this wonderful book at Powell's Books, a great independent bookstore with internets reach.  They are much better than Amazon, although they don't sell dildoes or lawn furniture.
**You can also buy all of Harrison's books at Powell's as well.  It would serve you well to read all of his work.  His poetry is fantastic & his fiction wonderful.

$172.00/Year Is Apparently Chump Change For President Obama, Paul Begala, & The Truly Awful Mary Matalin

Another great Digby post.

You know, for me it's even beyond the lack of empathy and common touch. It's the political malpractice that I can't get over. Are these people really so insulated in green rooms and limousines and fat cat fundraisers that they have no idea that they sound like total assholes? Huge numbers of people in this country are living in economic terror right now, wondering if they are going to have a roof over their heads next month. They love to eat lunch at their desk --- in fact, they'd love to have a desk. And these idiots are trying to tell us that 172k a year is minimum wage?

Julia Bonds, R.I.P.

After winning the national Goldman prize, Mrs. Bonds said her activism arose from the day her grandson stood in the stream her family had enjoyed for six generations with his little fists full of dead fish — and dead fish floating all around.

She said: “ ‘What’s wrong with these fish?’ he asked. That day I knew that if I didn’t do something, that would be the future of our children.’’

She's dead. My emphasis.
