The World Is Getting Warmer
That's a "no shit, Dick Tracy" headline, capiche? An ocean current that runs into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than its been for 2,000 years.
A North Atlantic current flowing into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than for at least 2,000 years in a sign that global warming is likely to bring ice-free seas around the North Pole in summers, a study showed.
Scientists said that waters at the northern end of the Gulf Stream, between Greenland and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, averaged 6 degrees Celsius (42.80F) in recent summers, warmer than at natural peaks during Roman or Medieval times.
"The temperature is unprecedented in the past 2,000 years," lead author Robert Spielhagen of the Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Literature in Mainz, Germany, told Reuters of the study in Friday's edition of the journal Science.
The summer water temperatures, reconstructed from the makeup of tiny organisms buried in sediments in the Fram strait, have risen from an average 5.2 degrees Celsius (41.36F) from 1890-2007 and about 3.4C (38.12F) in the previous 1,900 years.
The findings were a new sign that human activities were stoking modern warming since temperatures are above past warm periods linked to swings in the sun's output that enabled, for instance, the Vikings to farm in Greenland in Medieval times.
"We found that modern Fram Strait water temperatures are well outside the natural bounds," Thomas Marchitto, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of the authors, said in a statement.
The Fram strait is the main carrier of ocean heat to the Arctic.
Of course the dickish deniers will probably say something along the lines of god providing a Northwest Passage, the one that so many died trying to find. My emphases.
The Chanllenger Disaster
I was sitting at home, nothing new there, & was watching the teevee. The disaster was all over the news during the day. The Kid, who about 8 years old at the time, came home & said they had talked about it at school. It was strange, watching the wispy, white clouds that were what was left of the shuttle, of the people, drift downward. I remembered sitting on the ground at Devil's Lake State Park here in Wisco having a picnic with my best friend & his then wife. It was hot, C. was very pregnant & worried if the potato salad was OK in the heat. That was the day we landed on the moon, fulfilling the promise JFK made years earlier. I must say, we weren't impressed. We were in school learning about all kinds of stuff, including the immense problems facing the country & the world. Vietnam, of course, pollution in women's breast milk, racism in the academy, poverty, & a long losing streak by the Wisco Badger football team. While I'm fascinated by space, space travel, research, etc., the military clearly took over the space program. All the secret payloads,etc., sure didn't inspire me to think beyond the planet. BTW, the potato salad was fine, no one got sick.

I believe this is a great model of how to live a life. I did not watch the speech. I listened to Thom Hartmann yesterday & I'm starting to hear something pretty creepy, namely, the refrain of would you rather have McCain? & even for 2012, do you want Palin? or Huckabee (not likely since the $3 million home in FL is in the way)? or you name the low-life ReThug. Maybe, just maybe, we should all vote for the worst ReThug in the bunch. Let America reach rock bottom sooner, rather than later. Just look at Wisco, my home state. The ReThugs are in complete control - legislative, governor, Supreme Court (the best that money can buy, literally). The stupid governor is now demanding that he should be able to tell the agencies in charge of implementing the law how to implement the law - every agency. He will probably get that authority. He is on his way to becoming our dear leader. Things are worse than I ever imagined they would be. I figured the brain addled Reagan (red Ron, Jr.'s new book) was an anomaly. All those years as a particularly bad B-actor paid off in spades for him, & the country suffered, but we would be able to overcome. I don't believe that anymore. In fact, I'm starting to think about removing myself completely from the political, what's the point? This isn't original, see Norwegianity.

Paul Mirengoff Once Called Me A Moron
I was impressed that I even made it to the radar scree of the dicks at Power(Bullshit)line. Anyway, Mirengoff 's clear racism & backward thinking has finally come back to bite him in his fat ass. I couldn't be happier. The lesson here? I guess it's don't fuck with the creator or the Yaqui. Here's something Mirengoff lacks - a heart. Of course, he does become breathless when thinking about soccer. While I certainly respect the rest of the world's fantastic support for soccer, I find it is only less boring than baseball. However, like golf (without Tiger), I find the most restful naps come in conjunction with watching & listening to those games.

I did read the local paper & the Sunday Milwaukee Journal (it was a pretty good paper back then, not so much now). In the intervening years I read a lot about this man & other men & women in Africa, good people murdered with the direct help of America. & to top this off, I was watching some dumbass hunting show yesterday & this woman host referred to Africa as the dark continent. She might as well have said what she meant - the darky continent. It is so frustrating & humiliating to keep seeing this being said in America in the 21st century. oh well, we have our guns & our version of a warrior god.

The Conviction & Sentencing Of That Rat DeLay
I'm happy that the criminal Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison. I'm angry that the judge then let him out while he appeals. Once again, if you are rich & white, you can manipulate our justice system. DeLay may be free for years, according to the prosecutors. That is just not fair & it is not justice. He should begin serving his 3 year sentence right now, just like a normal person, or a poor person, or a person of color.
Senior Judge Pat Priest sentenced him to the three-year term on the conspiracy charge. He also sentenced him to five years in prison on the money laundering charge but allowed DeLay to accept 10 years of probation instead of more prison time.
DeLay was immediately taken into custody, but Priest granted a request from his attorneys that he be released on a $10,000 bond pending appeal once he is processed at the county jail. Prosecutors said it could mean DeLay will be free for months or even years as his appeal makes it through the Texas court system.
I sure hope that I get the choice of 10 years of probation instead of more prison time. That vaunted Texas hard-ass justice is apparently just for black & Latinos. I wonder if the judge spent time in a hot tub, smoking cigars & sipping the finest whiskey with DeLay, the bug killer. Sadly, I wonder how many lives DeLay ruined by the power he wielded. No act, no matter how heinous,” he said, “must be allowed to stop us.”

In an emotional news conference late Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik (D) denounced the nation's vitriolic political climate and noted Arizona's part in the rancor after a controversial crackdown on illegal immigration.
"The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous, and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital," Dupnik said. "We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
The fiery rhetoric that has taken hold in politics, Dupnik said, "may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

Arizona has been ground zero for the guns and threats agitation from the right over the last two years. And as an example of the atmosphere in the state of late, back this summer her Tea Party opponent Jesse Kelly held a "Target for Victory" fundraiser in which contributors could help "remove" Giffords from office by "shoot[ing] a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.

NYT mentions Palin's website as well. The news about Ms. Giffords, however, is lousy. One wonders about these "through and through" brain traumas.
Dr. Peter Rhee said that she had been shot once in the head, “through and through,” with the bullet going through her brain.
“I can tell you at this time, I am very optimistic about her recovery,” Dr. Rhee said in a news conference. “We cannot tell what kind of recovery but I’m as optimistic as it can get in this kind of situation.”
An official with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that six people had been killed and 18 wounded in the shooting, including a federal judge, John Roll, who had been involved in immigration cases and had previously received death threats. Among the six dead was a child about 9 years old, the hospital confirmed.

mf has a great post/essay on one person's understanding that all is impermanent. Along with any sense of responsibility from the government, i.e., us (theoretically, I know), he saw how bogus the social contract was/is in a country that, as a matter of policy, respects free markets more than people.
I could no longer convince myself that what I witnessed was an anomaly and not the way the world worked. When all of your assumptions about life and society, even those o, ne mocked (religion, the government) were proved to be made of thin tissue that could not stand up to the flood waters, when confronted with all of the lies required to live as a decent, respectable human being in this place and time, it was more than my mind could handle. I struggled to assemble some new organizational scheme, some way to make sense of the world and myself.
It's going to get worse, people, maybe, since I'm butchering up a button buck road kill today, not much blood, but plenty of knives.

I'm telling you Jim Harrison,** you better move out of this asshole state sooner rather than later. It's a sad thing, this hatred of anyone who is non-white, or chooses to see reality as it is & then chooses to do something about it. We Dirty Fucking Hippies are right, have been right all along, but we have chosen, like our intellectual & practical forebears to help people get healthier, help people to become happier, help people realize what their brains & body can do, make sure everyone has decent housing, safe food, clean air & water, unemployment insurance, Social Security, Medicare, smooth roads, sewers, & weekends. All that means, of course, is that we did stuff rather than opt to make billions or climb the power ladder by stabbing our friends, foes, & family in the back.

Are these people really so insulated in green rooms and limousines and fat cat fundraisers that they have no idea that they sound like total assholes? Julia Bonds, R.I.P.
After winning the national Goldman prize, Mrs. Bonds said her activism arose from the day her grandson stood in the stream her family had enjoyed for six generations with his little fists full of dead fish — and dead fish floating all around.
She said: “ ‘What’s wrong with these fish?’ he asked. That day I knew that if I didn’t do something, that would be the future of our children.’’
