Father George Votruba, 81, of Rice Lake died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at Our House Assisted Living. He was born April 18, 1929, in Haugen, to George and Martha (Hruska) Votruba.
Al Jazeera English has a live stream. It's free & I suppose in this day & age of American paranoia & loss of individual rights it will add to the thickness of your FBI file, but, big whoop.
A North Atlantic current flowing into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than for at least 2,000 years in a sign that global warming is likely to bring ice-free seas around the North Pole in summers, a study showed.
Scientists said that waters at the northern end of the Gulf Stream, between Greenland and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, averaged 6 degrees Celsius (42.80F) in recent summers, warmer than at natural peaks during Roman or Medieval times.
"The temperature is unprecedented in the past 2,000 years," lead author Robert Spielhagen of the Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Literature in Mainz, Germany, told Reuters of the study in Friday's edition of the journal Science.
The summer water temperatures, reconstructed from the makeup of tiny organisms buried in sediments in the Fram strait, have risen from an average 5.2 degrees Celsius (41.36F) from 1890-2007 and about 3.4C (38.12F) in the previous 1,900 years.
The findings were a new sign that human activities were stoking modern warming since temperatures are above past warm periods linked to swings in the sun's output that enabled, for instance, the Vikings to farm in Greenland in Medieval times.
"We found that modern Fram Strait water temperatures are well outside the natural bounds," Thomas Marchitto, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of the authors, said in a statement.
The Fram strait is the main carrier of ocean heat to the Arctic.
I was sitting at home, nothing new there, & was watching the teevee. The disaster was all over the news during the day. The Kid, who about 8 years old at the time, came home & said they had talked about it at school. It was strange, watching the wispy, white clouds that were what was left of the shuttle, of the people, drift downward. I remembered sitting on the ground at Devil's Lake State Park here in Wisco having a picnic with my best friend & his then wife. It was hot, C. was very pregnant & worried if the potato salad was OK in the heat. That was the day we landed on the moon, fulfilling the promise JFK made years earlier. I must say, we weren't impressed. We were in school learning about all kinds of stuff, including the immense problems facing the country & the world. Vietnam, of course, pollution in women's breast milk, racism in the academy, poverty, & a long losing streak by the Wisco Badger football team. While I'm fascinated by space, space travel, research, etc., the military clearly took over the space program. All the secret payloads, etc., sure didn't inspire me to think beyond the planet. BTW, the potato salad was fine, no one got sick.
The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must." - Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011
In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto's Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America's organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it's time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for "coexistence" with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack.
No comment on the SOTU. Nothing Obama says or does is of any interest to me. I may hav(sic) slipped back into my politic ways, but I do not intend to waste my time or yours with that which matters little, all having been settled in a boardroom or club long before being debated in Congress.
I strongly suspect that nothing the Democrats ever do or say again will much impress me. They are not the smug swine of the right, but in every other regard are as unacquainted with truth and the right path as any tax protesting shirker on the right.
I suppose the few of my loyal five (yes,5!) readers who actually like baseball will find some solace in the result of this study at the U. of IL. Me, I'm not so happy about it.
I was impressed that I even made it to the radar scree of the dicks at Power(Bullshit)line. Anyway, Mirengoff 's clear racism & backward thinking has finally come back to bite him in his fat ass. I couldn't be happier. The lesson here? I guess it's don't fuck with the creator or the Yaqui. Here's something Mirengoff lacks - a heart. Of course, he does become breathless when thinking about soccer. While I certainly respect the rest of the world's fantastic support for soccer, I find it is only less boring than baseball. However, like golf (without Tiger), I find the most restful naps come in conjunction with watching & listening to those games.
For me there is only traveling on paths that have heart, on any path that may have heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length. And there I travel looking, looking, breathlessly.

Well, no. but sodium thiopental is the means for state sponsored murder. I'm glad Hospira will no longer produce it. Kudos to Italy for really living up to its belief that capital punishment is no way to increase human dignity.
The decision by Hospira of Lake Forest., Ill., was prompted by demands from Italy, which does not have capital punishment, that no sodium thiopental - which the company had planned to make at its plant outside Milan - be used for executions, officials said.
I remember this, even though I was 12 years old & living in a small town in northern Wisco. I did read the local paper & the Sunday Milwaukee Journal (it was a pretty good paper back then, not so much now). I watched the teevee news & actually listened to AM radio (mostly to tune in a Chicago station to listen to an Ali bout, for free!) In the intervening years I read a lot about this man & other men & women in Africa, good people murdered with the direct help of America. & to top this off, I was watching some dumbass hunting show yesterday & this woman host referred to Africa as the dark continent. She might as well have said what she meant - the darky continent. It is so frustrating & humiliating to keep seeing this being said in America in the 21st century. oh well, we have our guns & our version of a warrior god.
It's funny, isn't it? If Walker gets his complete way, & it looks that way since Wisco voters acted studpidly in the last election, we will be the Mississippi of the north. & look how great Mississippi is:
Median Family Income: $39,319.00 (Ranked 50th) - Wisco: $55,780.00 (ranked 18th)
Nest Egg Index: 85.48 (Ranked 50th) - Wisco: 107.41 (ranked 9th)
Education (% of students above national average - math): 1% (ranked 49th) - Wisco: 7% (ranked 8th)
Education-Best Educated: -14.31 (ranked 49th, only AZ is worse, hmmm) - Wisco: 8.45 (ranked 8th)
Health: 18.43 (ranked 49th) - Wisco: 8.07 (ranked 14th)
I think y'all can get the drift. This is where Scott Walker & Company are taking us. Kill high speed rail, kill biomass heating plant. We're open for business all right.
Bradford DeLong. I like this statement:
Perhaps the collapse of the union movement means that politicians nowadays tend not to see anybody who speaks for the people in the bottom half of the American income distribution.
I would, of course, say: Doh!
John Paul II died in 2005. Yet, in 1997, the Vatican, which at last look, was run by John Paul II, told the Irish bishops to shut the fuck up about priests molesting/raping/abusing children. I guess they had to lower the bar a bit in order to sneak this awful human being into the saint club.
This is one loon Maine no longer needs. It's much like a local businessman exploiting people of color & then having his surrogates claim it would be impossible for him to be racist, he has a black son-in-law. Yeah, right.
LePage said, "Tell them to kiss my butt."
When, dear loyal five (yes, 5!) readers, when, will the world see me as the all-knowing one. & this guy is considered a saint by the right-wing dopesters - well, yeah. We have been in steady decline since Reagan was elected & he immediately fired all the air traiffic controllers. & now, a family member says his father's brain was full of holes. Doesn't say much about the federal doctors at the Walter Reed complex.
Captain America is really 70 years old? Sheesh. I may not sell my bike after all. It may keep me younger.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday that last year was tied as the planet's hottest on record.
Surface temperatures in 2010 were tied with 2005: both years, up approximately 1.12 degrees Fahrenheit over the 20th century's average.
Surface temperatures for the Earth's oceans were also up by 0.88 degrees Fahrenheit in 2010, once again tying with 2005, this time for the third warmest year on record.*****They also cited the Global Historical Climatology Network, which found that 2010 was also the wettest year on record. They added that the Pacific ocean saw fewer hurricanes than any year since the mid-1960s, while the Atlantic ocean had an "extremely active" year with 19 different named storms.
I am over rawstory, com. Truth is one thing, agendized bullshit (Al Goreism) is completely another. If you are stupid or uninformed enough to buy into this shit please get smarter or get the fuck off my planet.
& the Bristish students could show the way & manner of reacting to what's happening to America. The same the betrayal of the young, the independent, the left, the normal everyday person is going on here. & now, with his Wall St. buddies President Obama is abandoning the middle class, or, I should say, what is left of America's middle class.
Like Obama, Clegg was an inspirational, out-of-the-box candidate who energized a generation of young voters. Although the U.S. president's ratings have also fallen sharply, Clegg appears to be facing a far stronger backlash, especially among students.
"I supported the Lib Dems. I campaigned for them amongst my friends and handed out leaflets," said Rachel Sullivan, 20, an English literature major at Oxford who has taken part in the demonstrations. "But now I feel that I was championing a childish cause, a cause for people who were not honest about what they stood for. . . . There are many students who will never vote Lib Dem again."
My emphasis.
Of course, I'm not holding my breath, yet.
One could argue that at a moment like like platitudes would be OK, soothing words actually help, but one would be wrong.
The bleakest year in foreclosure crisis has only just begun. Lenders are poised to take back more homes this year than any other since the U.S. housing meltdown began in 2006. About 5 million borrowers are at least two months behind on their mortgages and more will miss payments as they struggle with job losses and loans worth more than their home's value, industry analysts forecast.
A couple of Wisco morons introduced a bill that would require every Wisco citizen to present a voter ID in order to vote in any election. These two big thinkers are ReThug Rep. Jeff Stone (Asshat-Greenfield0 & Sen. Joe Leigham (Asshat-Sheboygan). This comes from a email from One Wisconsin Now & they are starting the Voter Protection Task Force. Go here:
You will be able to get involved in protecting every Wisco citizen's right to vote.
Stuff like this just goes to show how much bullshit poured out of Scott Walker's mouth during the campaign. Lots of jobs created with this bill.
He's dead. I faintly remember this man. Clearly, he is someone who should be remembered.
TPM has the latest list of foaming at the mouth, hillbilly gun nuts. Including the politically brave Manchin of West Virginia. BTW, he is the only one listed who claims to be a member of the Democratic Party. Someone in West Virginia had better help him bone up on the reality of "methaphors." Or, maybe what a metaphor is.
Hullabaloo has a list of right-wing terrorism that is unsettling. I didn't know of many of these events & I sort of pride myself with keeping up on stuff like this. Of course, it would be a crime against civility to bring it up. Here is the first thing on the list:
-- July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how "liberals" are "destroying America," walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.
The first news of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and at least 18 others carried all the ingredients anyone might need to admit that this is where the wild, paranoid side of political discourse within America has inevitably led.
The authors continue:
And yet the American television talk shows Sunday refused to acknowledge the obvious, failed to press on with the fundamentally revised conversation so clearly needed. How to pull the nation back from this brink of a permanently poisoned civil society?
Instead, anyone who dared implicate in this tragedy Sarah Palin's "reload" mantra, or the cross-hairs imagery employed in Republican election ads, was swatted down on the air by conservatives assuring that we don't know why Jared Loughner did what he did. It "cheapens" the tragedy to want to contextualize it, they said. Loughner seemed to be mentally unbalanced, they noted, as if that was some sort of total explanation that granted absolution to what America's political culture has become.
Go read the whole thing, it's good. My emphasis.
Senior Judge Pat Priest sentenced him to the three-year term on the conspiracy charge. He also sentenced him to five years in prison on the money laundering charge but allowed DeLay to accept 10 years of probation instead of more prison time.
DeLay was immediately taken into custody, but Priest granted a request from his attorneys that he be released on a $10,000 bond pending appeal once he is processed at the county jail. Prosecutors said it could mean DeLay will be free for months or even years as his appeal makes it through the Texas court system.
Via The Kid, thanks hon. & I, too, love Michael Moore, even if he is fat. Go watch Sicko & tell me we haven't been getting screwed & continue to be screwed by our health care.
Or, become Mike's MySpace Friend.
This is the email The Kid got & she sent it on to me. I'm sure lucky she didn't turn into an MBA, or worse, a chicken farmer. (inside joke, loyal five (yes!).

If a Detroit Muslim put a map on the web w/crosshairs on 20 pols, then 1 of them got shot, where would he b sitting right now? Just asking.
Listen to John Boner, (ReThug-Asshat), talke about us. Note that he doesn't say the House or the American people. He apparently wants to continue the hateful language & action. What did these morons expect. Remember Palin wants you to reload.
The new House speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, in an early Sunday appearance in his hometown of West Chester, decried the attack and said it was reminder that public service “comes with a risk.” Mr. Boehner urged prayers for Ms. Giffords and the other victims and also told his House colleagues to persevere in fulfilling their oath of office. “This inhuman act should not and will not deter us. No act, no matter how heinous,” he said, “must be allowed to stop us.”
& here. & here. (Warning: hypocrite Fluffly,er,Duffy alert.)
In an emotional news conference late Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik (D) denounced the nation's vitriolic political climate and noted Arizona's part in the rancor after a controversial crackdown on illegal immigration.
"The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous, and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital," Dupnik said. "We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
The fiery rhetoric that has taken hold in politics, Dupnik said, "may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."
& here. & here. (Sad irony. She dead girl was born on 9/11.)
My emphasis,
For crying out loud, this is news? It shows, IMO, just how insulated the media has become. I knew this 45 years ago & I wasn't even the Salutatorian of my high school class. I'm purposely leaving outt Valedictorian for obvious reasons. Stop that snickering over there in the peanut gallery. Thanks.
Arizona has been ground zero for the guns and threats agitation from the right over the last two years. And as an example of the atmosphere in the state of late, back this summer her Tea Party opponent Jesse Kelly held a "Target for Victory" fundraiser in which contributors could help "remove" Giffords from office by "shoot[ing] a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.
NYT mentions Palin's website as well. The news about Ms. Giffords, however, is lousy. One wonders about these "through and through" brain traumas.
Dr. Peter Rhee said that she had been shot once in the head, “through and through,” with the bullet going through her brain.
“I can tell you at this time, I am very optimistic about her recovery,” Dr. Rhee said in a news conference. “We cannot tell what kind of recovery but I’m as optimistic as it can get in this kind of situation.”
An official with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that six people had been killed and 18 wounded in the shooting, including a federal judge, John Roll, who had been involved in immigration cases and had previously received death threats. Among the six dead was a child about 9 years old, the hospital confirmed.
*****
During the fall campaign, Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, posted a controversial map on her Facebook page depicting spots where Democrats were running for re-election; those Democrats were noted by crosshairs symbols like those seen through the scope of a gun. Ms. Giffords was among those on Ms. Palin’s map.
Hmmm, could this be the first of many? In fact, Palin listed 20 Congress members in her "takeback20" campaign. Each of these 20, including Gabrielle Giffords, had a cross-hairs across their faces. I was unable to connect to the "takeback20" website. Surprise, surprise. On Palin's Facebook page you can click to this comment:
My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.
On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.
What a fucking hypocrite. What she wanted happened & she has the fucking gall to say she is praying for the woman & for peace? Just goddamned great. You know, I think I will just spew some more hate - I hope Sarah Palin becomes such a small asterisk in American history she will replace Millard Fillmore. Sorry Millard, you actually were elected after all. & I'll bet you didn't have someone draw pictures of your enemies & then have them draw a gun bead on their foreheads. I'll try & think of a more appropriate nobody to compare Palin with. Hate, hate, yeah sure you neo-Nazis.
I could no longer convince myself that what I witnessed was an anomaly and not the way the world worked. When all of your assumptions about life and society, even those o, ne mocked (religion, the government) were proved to be made of thin tissue that could not stand up to the flood waters, when confronted with all of the lies required to live as a decent, respectable human being in this place and time, it was more than my mind could handle. I struggled to assemble some new organizational scheme, some way to make sense of the world and myself.
Another great Digby post.
You know, for me it's even beyond the lack of empathy and common touch. It's the political malpractice that I can't get over. Are these people really so insulated in green rooms and limousines and fat cat fundraisers that they have no idea that they sound like total assholes? Huge numbers of people in this country are living in economic terror right now, wondering if they are going to have a roof over their heads next month. They love to eat lunch at their desk --- in fact, they'd love to have a desk. And these idiots are trying to tell us that 172k a year is minimum wage?
Go to the link & watch the video. Well, read the post & then watch the video. My emphasis.
After winning the national Goldman prize, Mrs. Bonds said her activism arose from the day her grandson stood in the stream her family had enjoyed for six generations with his little fists full of dead fish — and dead fish floating all around.
She said: “ ‘What’s wrong with these fish?’ he asked. That day I knew that if I didn’t do something, that would be the future of our children.’’
She's dead. My emphasis.
