Another Reason Why Sen. Clinton Is Wrong For America

& for the Democratic Party, for that matter. While it is true that she & her husband are separate beings, this sort of ingenuousness is at the heart of the ReThug strategy. It's this constant drumbeat to lower taxes while raising "fees", etc. Why wasn't she arguing publicly against her husband's actions in destroying 200 Hoosier jobs? So much for being independent.
The Clinton campaign did not respond to requests for comment.
Sound familiar?

Just Plain Evil

As pointed out in a previous post, the neo-cons & the just plain cons (boy, I wish that were true.) are evil, & sometimes I wonder what the hell the point of their evilness is? Here we have Dick "Sick Dick" Cheney out in the field doing "research" on whales -
Another internal document shows that the officials working for the Vice President also raised spurious objections to the science. According to this document, the Vice President's staff "contends that we have no evidence (i.e., hard data) that lowering the speeds of 'large ships' will actually make a difference. NOAA rejected these objections, writing that both a statistical analysis of ship strike records and the peer-reviewed literature justified the final rule. In its response to the objections from the Vice President's staff, NOAA reported that there is "no basis to overturn our previous conclusion that imposing a speed limit on large vessels would be beneficial to whales."

Even When They Are Fired

They are proud of the work they have done. What gets me is that even with the firing, it comes way too late to be in any stretch of any imagination (except, of course, a ReThug imagination) a moment of accountability & justice. This is from Doan's resignation letter.
These accomplishments are made even more enjoyable by the fact that there were lots of people who told us they could never be done.
All I can say is WTF?

Neo-Cons & The Endless War

HTML Mencken writes a great post over at SN! While some of the characters may be new to some, it is the same old song, to steal from the post. & here is another stolen bit:
…which is about the nature of neoconservatism. Unlike traditional conservatives, the neocons aren’t stupid. But like traditional conservatives, they are evil — only much more so. As such, neocons know precisely what kind of political climate they need in order to flourish, and will go great lengths to manipulate the environment accordingly. They need a “long war,” and will ceaselessly agitate for one in times of peace, or inflame and enlarge one that’s already existing.

This Was Bound To Happen

I wonder how many sports are out in their garages or backyards right now welding train tracks to the front bumpers of their cars? If they get lucky, they will wind up here.
To remedy that, Sanders created an alternative online: The Road Kill Record Book Club.

Condi, Condi, Condi

Please, tell me if I'm wrong, I thought you were the top diplomat for America? I thought you were the best of the best, even if you shopped too much for shoes. Now I find out, however, that you've been played the cuckold by an Iranian general.
This time, Suleimani slipped into the Green Zone to negotiate with Shiite politicians and to ensure that Iraq's final choice was acceptable to Tehran.

In the end, the Iraqis compromised on Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki.

Stunned by the security breach, American officials demanded an explanation from their Iraqi allies.

U.S. officials "were upset, but this solved the problem at the time," Iraqi Vice President Adil Abdul Mahdi told McClatchy in an interview this month at his Baghdad office. "I think they were pleased on one side, they were unpleased from the other side. Pleased that there was a solution to the standstill situation that we had at that time, but of course, I think, unpleased because he (Suleimani) was in the Green Zone."

Talk about not knowing how to do anything.

FDA

I was listening to the Diane Rehm show today as they talked about bisphenol A, a toxic substance I've blogged about before, see here & here & here & here &, finally, here. They had a guy on from the FDA who kept saying that consumers needed clarity & that the government, via the FDA, was giving them that clarity. Of course, he felt that bisphenol A was perfectly OK, & that citizens should just believe the FDA. What he forgot was that Bu$hCo's FDA could give a rat's ass about the consumer, they are only concerned with the corporations that continue to lie & cheat us. Here is the newest example of the FDA's stellar work.
A new analysis concludes that the Food and Drug Administration approved experiments with artificial blood substitutes even after studies showed that the controversial products posed a clear risk of causing heart attacks and death.
Ah, heck, what's a few death & debilitations when the health of the corporations is at stake?

Interesting

Here's an interesting story from today's LA Times. I see that the man in the story is a retired teacher & is 62 years old. It goes to show what a good retirement can do for a person. It's too bad that Americans are being bullied into later & later retirements. The point of a work life is to retire from it someday, & be healthy & relatively young when the retirement comes.

From A Pro-Clinton Blog That Brooks No Interference

From the six comments on a post about Rev. Wright - April 28th, 2008 @ 9:43 am

#1: SilverFox Said: ...Check it out....

#2: Janis Said: ...Rev. Wright should make a point of studying 19th century Irish history, or the history of Jews in Medieval Europe....

#3: Stuart O'Neill Said: ...The only possible reason for his continued actions is that he has finally gotten the national platform he has always desired....

#4: Janis Said: ...Stuart, I recall having a conversation with a friend of mine about Welsh history and politics (I’m a serious devotee), and between those conversations and my own study, it’s really been an eye-opener for me as to how similar oppressed peoples are considered and how similarly we react....

#5: Gilbert Martinez Said: ...Stuart, I’m not sure that camp Obama wasn’t involved in Wright’s recent appearances....

#6: Pamela Leavey Said: ...Wright has thrown Obama under the bus....

With Dems like this, who the hell needs ReThuglicans? He asked in amazement.

The Truth Hurts

All of these Sen. Clinton lovers need to read this. Unfortunately, there are many pro-Clinton blogs, & you know who you are, who will not even consider this man's life, much less read his words. I guess it shows just how backward Sen. Clinton & her supporters are. I'm not a religious person, in fact, I guess you could say I'm anti-religion, but, hell, if I was, this man just might be my pastor.
“I served six years in the military,” Barack Obama’s longtime pastor said. “Does that make me patriotic? How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?“
....
“My goddaughter’s unit just arrived in Iraq this week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of privilege
to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American boys and girls to die over a lie,” he said.
I'm not much of a military person either, I guess you could say I'm anti-military. I'm sorry Rev. Wright's goddaughter is caught up in the lie of a vanity war.

Somedays I Don't Know Why I Even Try

I've been alive almost 59 years, I'm one month shy. When I was 18 I was able to go to one of the best universities in the world, the University of Wisco-Madison. I learned a lot in the 2 years I was in school & the 3 years I spent in Madison. I finished my BA 6 years later, & added a Master's degree in the '90s. One thing I somehow always believed - that this country, America or Amerika or the U. S. of A. had a lot of problems, a lot of historical baggage, a lot of really evil bastards trying & succeeding in gaining power, but, & here's the one thing - we were, at heart, a decent, progressive country. Boy, talk about being naive. It appears the fucking ReThuglican Party has been successful at one thing that I never thought would happen - they have managed to do what even George Wallace couldn't do, deny the vote to black folks & other people of color & people too poor to own or drive a car. Thanks Indiana you lousy state. You can add this to your fucking hall of fame which includes Bobby Knight (the best thing UW-Madison ever did was not hire you), Touchdown Jesus, Notre Dame & the fact that my best friend moved there. We haven't seen each other for a long time, I miss him. We both missed each other's children growing up. Oh, well, I'm just one more stupid, dirty fucking hippie who is overweight & has a bunch of bird dogs. Might be time for a beer or some gin or, no, that's Rush Limbaugh territory & you know how much he is loved by his followers. It's OK, he's a ReThug.
First of all, let's not forget that this may be the biggest political land mine the Bush administration has set for Democrats. "Voter fraud" was, you'll remember, at the bottom of the US Attorney scandals and one of their main tools for suppressing the Democratic vote. This is the realization of a very long term plan to chip away at the Voting Rights Act. Republicans, like all aristocrats, know that if enough average people vote, they will lose. Period.

This is true, but if you can't vote, you can't vote them out. If you can't vote them out, you say why bother trying to vote them out. If you don't bother to try, you embrace guns, god, & bitterness. That's not very original, but it's the truth. & of course, not being original means we must have Sen. Clinton in the White House. That will mean a lot of change, right? Wrong. But, frankly, right now, I just don't give a shit.

The Comedy Never Ceases

From the front page of my local paper:
As boating season approaches, the Bush administration wants to enlist the country’s 80 million recreational boaters to help reduce the chances that a small boat could deliver a nuclear or radiological bomb somewhere along the country’s 95,000 miles of coastline and inland waterways.
Unfortunately, as my loyal four readers know, I DO NOT HAVE A BOAT. One more reason to throw myself from the ore dock, since I won't be able to protect my country from the invading Canadians. Feeling safer yet?

Waukesha County Sucks

Unless you drive an Escalade & are a doctor. What's wrong? Waukesha County is full of right wing nut jobs who think they are better than anyone else. Good job, protect a drunk physician after he's killed three people. Good job, cops.
Oconomowoc police refused to release any details about the accident, including preliminary reports that are public records. The Waukesha County medical examiner's office also refused to provide any information and referred reporters to Oconomowoc police.

Giant squids. I, for one, wonder about giant calamari. Breaded & deep fried, of course.

Things Are Going So Well

When will Congress, including the dumb ass ReThugs finally realize that President 22% is nothing to be afraid of. Look at how well the war in Afghanistan is going. Remember, we left that country to invade & occupy Iraq. Things have worked out great for both countries.

Throw Out Your Nalgenes

More on the chemical bisphenol A. This comes to as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention for the last 38 years. Since Reagan, the role of the federal government has been to protect corporations, not people. Just to cut to the chase:
Bisphenol A is a hormone disruptor. Studies have linked low-dose BPA exposure with such effects as: permanent changes to genital tract; increase prostate weight; decline in testosterone; breast cells predisposed to cancer; prostate cells more sensitive to hormones and cancer; and hyperactivity.
So, throw out your Nalgene bottle & go buy a Sigg. I don't own any stock in Sigg, I just really like their bottles. I am, however, a member of the great cooperative REI. So sue me. My emphasis in the quote.

Why do we have such a fool as our President? If you are a landscaper & have a 1-ton diesel pickup to truck around your tools & materials, this stooopid rebate won't allow you to fill up the fuel tank on your truck more than three times. Big fucking deal.
President Bush said tax rebates will start going out Monday, earlier than previously announced, and should help Americans cope with rising gasoline and food prices, as well as aid a slumping economy.
I fail to see how three fuel tank fill-ups will aid the economy, but, then again, I'm not an economist, nor am I the stooopidest President ever.

Happy Earth Day

If you're in the Minneapolis area watch the 10:00 p.m. local news on WCCO & you'll see the wonderful world of The Twins & their parents. They wrote an essay that made into the finals for a sizable chuck of money to green up their home. I'm real proud of all of them for doing this, plus The Twins were, of course, quite a hit with the reporter.

Also, thanks to a wonderful Wisco native, Gaylord Nelson for starting Earth Day back in 1970, when I was but a young lad looking for some, oh, yeah, trees.

Elizabeth Edwards Responds To McLiar

John McCain claims Elizabeth Edwards took a cheap shot against him by correcting pointing out that he has had government health care his whole life, his father was an admiral, he was a Navy pilot, he's been a politician. Here is part of her response. Man, I wish John Edwards was still in the race.
Sen. McCain noted that he was not receiving government health care for the six years he was in captivity. That is true. But it has nothing to do with my point — which is that the problem with Sen. McCain’s health care plan is not how it affects us –- but how it affects the tens of millions of Americans with preexisting conditions who, unlike Sen. McCain and myself, do not have the resources to pay for quality health care.

That is not a cheap shot, it is a potentially life and death question for tens of million of Americans. And it is a question Sen. McCain must address.

& remember, he will continue to receive government health care until he dies, unlike most of us.

Nothing To See Here, Move Along

Global warming is about to unleash some bad shit on some folks in Bhutan, one of the few countries I would like to visit someday.
Unfortunately, Punakha's residents are not alone in this picturesque Buddhist kingdom in having the threat of death and destruction hanging over their heads like an environmental sword of Damocles. Because of Earth's rising temperatures, at least 25 glacial lakes in Bhutan are at risk of overflowing and dumping their contents into the narrow valleys where much of the country's population lives.

Another Victory

I sure hope Bu$hCo & Dick "Dick" Cheney don't decide that Fernando Lugo needs to be removed, like Allende in Chile. Of course, Pinochet was a leader that always gave Cheney a woodie. Maybe I should begin referring to him as Dick "Sick Dick" Cheney? Just a thought.

If We Elect Sen. Clinton

We are going to get another President who blames everyone else when things go south. Put another way, Sen. Clinton refuses to hold herself accountable for anything. We don't need more of that.
The disturbing trend we've seen as Clinton and her team saw her fortunes fritter away at the polls, has been to blame losses on various constituencies, demographics in whole states, the caucus system -- everything except the fact that she couldn't make the sale in those primaries.

It's almost a pathological level of denial -- she's not winning the popular vote, number of states won, the delegate count or in the money race at this point. Her campaign blew the huge war chest on the high life, based on the premise that she wouldn't have to stay in the race beyond Super Tuesday.

The netroots didn't do that to her.

The investigation ought to have occurred well before the contract was ever awarded. & then there is the abuse not only of women & children, but the abuse of the child welfare system as well. They have used taxpayer money for their continued abuse of women & children. I wish I understood why the state & federal governments are so afraid of doing anything against these bastards. They should be locked up for ever.
Apparently, not all polygamous husbands own a chain of hardware stores like Big Love’s Bill Henrickson. Many choose to fleece the government for assistance. According to The Eldorado Success, nearly half of the fundamentalists in Colorado City receive food stamps at a cost of over 3 million dollars a year according to an October 2004 article. Also healthcare dollars through Arizona’s AHCCCS program provided about 8 million dollars a year of aid. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has spent 1.8 million dollars for the paving streets and providing fire departments. During the 2004-2005 school year, $19,866.88 of government money was provided per child in the Colorado City School system.

Kevin Drum Is An Idiot

Here's the background from Roger Ailes, the Good. Mr. Drum, DLC coothead that he is, disabled the comments for his really dumbass post. Luckily, I wasn't the only one to figure out that we could comment on another post Mr. Drum saw fit to print. Example:
You spend your time reading National Review to learn about the opinions of crackpots? Or do you have a staff of masochist interns who pore over their Web site while you lightly flick them with a cat o' nine tails?
Posted by: Anon on April 16, 2008 at 7:42 PM | PERMALINK

Oh, sorry. Here it is:
But comments aren't disabled on this post. Megan McArdle is an upper-middle class "libertarian" (read pro-big-business) twit. I can't believe you think she's serious. This is disturbing, Kevin.

Here's the comment I left on the same thread:
Mr. Drum:
As Roger Ailes, the Good, suggests, I am sending you a copy of a blog post I am thinking about posting on my blog. I would appreciate if you would let me know if it is a sexist attack on Ms. McArdle. Here's the post:

Megan McArdle just loves Ayn Rand & Atlas Shrugs. I thought most people read that book when they were 16 years old & thought it would be really cool to have a whole bunch of money with which to impress other kids? These kids normally grew the hell up, realized just how awful Randian thinking is & became Democrats. Ms. McArdle apparently forgot about the growing up part. Stoooopid girl.

Thank you for your time & attention to this potential post. I eagerly await your thoughts.

Best:

Joan Gout, per your comment, including Kevin acting like a conservative blogger (yes, that's deliberate snark) and turning off comments in advance of publishing his post, here’s my thought, including McArdle and Amy Sullivan being blog-twit twins separated at birth.

That’s why Kevin turned off comments, because he knows its true. (Read the post for what I’d like to do to both McArdle and Sullivan, together.)

And, Kevin, if you have a post that you’re afraid to accept comments on, instead of being a conservative blogger, don’t post it in the first place.

Oh, Canada

Looks like our neighbor to the north understands public health & the government's responsibility in that health, way better than our government does. To be fair, the U.S. National Institutes of Health released a report about the dangers of bisphenol A, although, as usual with the Bu$hco administration, they didn't ban the substance. Something that made me real happy was a great investigative report done by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel last year. It was good to see that paper actually do something worthwhile for a change. When the coldH2O family read about the bisphenol A, we took the correct & liberally knee-jerk action of going to the REI store in The Cities & bought four adult & two baby sized SIGG water bottles. They are a wonderful replacement for the blue, etc.,, Nalgene bottles. We all feel a little less like hippies, now, although we are all DFH when it comes to Bu$hCo's vanity war.
The image “http://www.mysigg.com/ProductImages/MYSIGG08/8157.60.JPG” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Full disclosure: I, nor any of the coldH2O family, owns any stock in SIGG. They are great water bottles, however. I'd go buy one now & quit drinking out of plastic, particularly if you have young people in the house. This is one environmental health issue that individuals can actually have an impact on, not only using purchasing power, but also by letting the government & your elected representatives know, that you find the present acceptance of bisphenol A not tolerable. Way to go Canada. We love you for hockey & for maybe banning this clearly harmful substance.

Even by the Wild West standards of this dusty desert town, where drug dealers have long smuggled their cargo across the Rio Grande and the unsolved killings of women drew international attention, the last three months have been a blood bath, officials say.

A turf war among drug cartels has claimed more than 210 lives in the first three months of this year. Many of those killed were young gunmen from out of town. The number of homicides this year is more than twice the total number of homicides for the same period last year. Several mass graves hiding 36 bodies in all have been discovered in the backyards of two houses owned by drug dealers.

Or this?
The lead author of Wednesday’s article, Dr. Joseph S. Ross of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said a close look at the Merck documents raised broad questions about the validity of much of the drug industry’s published research, because the ghostwriting practice appears to be widespread.

“It almost calls into question all legitimate research that’s been conducted by the pharmaceutical industry with the academic physician,” said Dr. Ross, whose article, written with colleagues, was published Wednesday in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association. and posted Tuesday on the journal’s Web site.
I'm going with the latter. I believe a lot more people are dead because of the criminality of the drug companies. This should not be understood as a defense of the violent & murderous thugs in the drug cartels, but I believe they could be removed by simply legalizing & regulating the recreational drugs they bring into the U.S. We continue the stupid & not-working war on drugs, but continue to provide the drug companies legal cover to kill without accountability.

The Surge, Boss, It's Really Working, Honest

I was going to make some comment about lipstick & a pig, but I no longer can stomach the comedy in regards to this absolute disaster in Iraq. We just went through a week of non-answers from Bu$hCo's handpicked General-on-the-ground. Here's one more example of why we should leave now & why we should have never been there to begin with.
A company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions on Tuesday night in Sadr City, defying American soldiers who implored them to hold the line against Shiite militias.
....
“It bugs the hell out of me,” said Sgt. George Lewis, Captain Veath’s platoon sergeant in Company B, Third Platoon, First Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment. “We don’t see any progress being made at all. We hear these guys in firefights. We know if we are not up there helping these guys out we are making very little progress.”

This Is Another Symptom

The Senate, the at least millionaires club, has produced a bill that helps their fellow millionaires. I don't think the American people approve of this sort of perversion. Harry Reid ought to be ashamed. It appears that these Democratic senators haver forgotten what it means to be a Democrat.
The Senate proclaimed a fierce bipartisan resolve two weeks ago to help American homeowners in danger of foreclosure. But while a bill that senators approved last week would take modest steps toward that goal, it would also provide billions of dollars in tax breaks — for automakers, airlines, alternative energy producers and other struggling industries, as well as home builders.
My emphasis.

McLiar Is The Correct Name

First, Sen. McCain's wife Cindy, she of the Barbie Doll Cindys, steals drugs from a medical charity she ran, now it's food recipes. Of course, the extremely wealthy Mrs. McCain can not bring herself to admit she did it, she has learned well from all the other ReThugs who refuse to take responsibility for their action. It was some low level staffer who plagiarized the recipes from The Food Network. I love food, so here is a great recipe from the aforementioned network.
Beer Battered Fried Trout Tacos with Spicy Horseradish Coleslaw
Recipe courtesy Emeril Lagasse

Oil for frying
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup beer
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
4 trout fillets, about 6 ounces each
2 tablespoons Essence, recipe follows
6 large soft flour tortillas
Spicy Horseradish Coleslaw, recipe follows
Hot sauce, such as Sriracha, if desired for serving

Heat the oil in a deep fryer or in a large saucepan to 375 degrees F.

Sift 1 cup of the flour, the baking powder, salt and cayenne pepper together into a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and add the oil, beer, and hot sauce. Stir until thoroughly incorporated and smooth. Season each trout fillet with 1 teaspoon of the Essence. Cut each fillet into diagonal 1 1/2-inch strips. Combine the remaining 1/2 cup flour with the remaining 2 teaspoons of Essence. Dredge the fish strips in the seasoned flour then shake to release any excess flour. Transfer to a plate.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Wrap the flour tortillas in aluminum foil and place in the oven to warm, or warm according to manufacturer's instructions.

Dredge each piece of fish in the beer batter, making sure the fish is completely coated. Allow any excess batter to drip into the bowl, then slowly lower the fish into the hot oil. Repeat with the remaining fish, working in batches if necessary. Fry the fish until it is puffed, golden brown and crispy, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the fish with a slotted spoon or tongs and drain on a paper-lined plate. Place the fish in a warm oven, while you cook the remaining fish, until you are ready to assemble the tacos.

Divide the fish strips between the warmed flour tortillas and top with some of the Spicy Horseradish Coleslaw. Drizzle with hot sauce, if desired.

Serve immediately.

Emeril's ESSENCE Creole Seasoning (also referred to as Bayou Blast):
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Yield: 2/3 cup

Recipe from "New New Orleans Cooking", by Emeril Lagasse and Jessie Tirsch
Published by William and Morrow, 1993.

Spicy Horseradish Coleslaw:
2 1/2 cups shredded green cabbage
2 1/2 cups shredded red cabbage
1 cup shredded carrots
2 tablespoons finely sliced green onions
1 1/2 cups peeled, seeded and diced cucumber
2 jalapenos, stem and seeds removed, minced
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream
3 tablespoons freshly grated horseradish or 1 1/2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
1 1/2 teaspoons Creole mustard or other coarse-grained mustard

Combine the green and red cabbages, carrots, and green onions in a large mixing bowl. In a small bowl toss the cucumbers with the lemon juice and add to the cabbage mixture.

In a small mixing bowl combine the vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper and whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the seasoned vinegar mixture over the cabbage mixture and toss to thoroughly combine. Cover with plastic wrap and transfer to the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes.

In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, horseradish and mustard and stir to combine. Add the mayonnaise mixture to the coleslaw and toss to thoroughly combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to overnight before serving.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

&, of course, it's from the wonderful BAM Emeril. Thanks to The Kid, I was able to eat at all three of Emeril's restaurants in New Orleans. I really enjoyed each meal there. Probably three of the five best meals in my life, at least from a go out to a restaurant kind of meal.

Go Do Something, Do It A Little Bit More

If you know what I mean, oh sorry, got sidetracked a bit. I now see that me loyal four readers did indeed go hen asked. So far over 80,000 folks have joined the effort. I now ask you to get your neighbors to do something as well. Maybe your mailman, your co-workers, your dog groomer, the guy who gives you the finger while you protest for peace. Thanks in advance, y'all. This makes me feel good, a little, anyway. You need to go here to fill out the form & get your letter emailed. Do this. It is so important. Bu$hCo & his minions need to be held accountable. We, as a country, need this sort of reconciliation. Get your lazy, recliner bound husband to do it, hell, if the loser won't do it, just fill in the info & put his name on it. The karma may not do him any good, but it will do a lot for you.

Why We Need A Democrat In The White House

& a lot more in Congress, as well. The asshole Big Pharma executives aren't making enough blood money, so they're just making the sickest of us, the ones least able to afford it, pay a lot more. Such humanitarians. It is times like this that I wish I believed in Hell.

Trouble Ahead, Trouble Behind

I don't mean to compare Sen. Clinton to The Dead, but she can't be happy when she hears comments like this.
"If elected, I'm sure she'll do a good job," said Michele Scarborough, a Quakertown borough councilwoman. "But I just don't feel she's one of us."

Wolf Blitzer & Sen. Lugar (R-IN) talk. Via, of course, Crooks & Liars. I'm glad somebody watches these Sunday morning "news" shows, I can't make myself do it anymore. I just love my satellite teevee.

Blitzer: “Is the U.S. military over stretched to the point that it can’t get the missions done with, Senator Lugar?”

Lugar: “Well, the testimony seems to be to that effect. That is, that we simply do not have, presently, enough armed forces to accomplish or missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, quite apart from anything else that might occur in the world. And yet, in this hearing on Iraq, Iran kept being mentioned. That that the Iranians are intruding, a proxy war is being fought. In other words, it was almost as if we were justifying our continued presence in Iraq with the fact that we may be in a conflict in Iran and furthermore, the al Qaeda wherever they may be. It’s a very confusing picture, to say the least. Now, it seems to me we’re going to have to come to grips with what is possible in Iraq and what kind of forces are required for that, but we’re certainly not at that point in the hearings. This is - I agree with Joe Biden, was simply punting the thing down the road and probably into the next administration and whoever the candidates may be right now, they face a awesome task of turning around a situation that really has not been resolved during this administration.

Before anyone falls too much in love with the "moderate" Sen. Lugar, chew on these stats for awhile.
Richard Lugar has voted with a majority of his Republican colleagues 78.6% of the time during the current Congress. This percentage does not include votes in which Lugar did not vote. See a list of his votes against his party since 1991, a list of all Senators in the 110th Congress with a similar score, or a full list of party voters.
....
9/20/07 Vote 345: H R 1585: Feingold Amdt. No. 2924; To safely redeploy United States troops from Iraq. No No
....
9/20/07 Vote 344: H R 1585: Cornyn Amdt. No. 2934; To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces. Yes Yes
....
9/20/07 Vote 343: H R 1585: Boxer Amdt. No. 2947; To reaffirm strong support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and to strongly condemn attacks on the honor, integrity, and patriotism of any individual who is serving or has served honorably in the United States Armed Forces, by any person or organization. No No
....
9/19/07 Vote 341: H R 1585: Webb Amdt. No. 2909; To specify minimum periods between deployment of units and members of the Armed Forces deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. No No
....
7/18/07 Vote 252: On the Motion: Motion to Invoke Cloture on the Levin Amdt. No. 2087; To provide for a reduction and transition of United States forces in Iraq. No No

From the WaPo archives. Actually, you can find all the votes by any of the members of Congress in the database. Pretty cool, actually. & for those of you who still think John McCain is some sort of maverick, he votes with his ReThug party 88.3% of the time, Lugar only 78.6%, as noted above.

Go Do Something

Loyal four readers, once again I must lean on you to go do something. Again, my friends, don't let the requirement that you give your address & phone number dissuade you from this important do something. The letter is going to your Senators, & they all require that specific info, including the really stupid 9 number Zip Code. Just go find it & save it in a folder on your desktop, that's what I do. & if you have done the last do something I implored you to do, it will probably automatically pop up when you go to type it in. If our children & grandchildren & great-grandchildren, or just the damn neighbor kids who keep running across your lawn, are to have some sort of decent future, we need to make Bu$hCo accountable. His absolutely casual admission of OKing torture stunned even the uber-cynical billycreek. It's right up there with Dick "Dick" Cheney's "So?" Go do something. The link is via the always good Crooks & Liars.

Just A Reminder

There is no longer the shadow of a doubt that the torture of prisoners was planned at the highest levels of the US government with the explicit knowledge and approval of the president. How do we know this? Bush himself admitted it.

Talking With Sen. Obama, Bird Hunting With Sen, Clinton

I just posted this comment over at Sadly, No! I like it so much I'm posting it here as well. It's my blog & I'll post if I want to.

You’re, well, right. But Sen. Clinton knows how to use a gun, she said so, watch your back, buster. Those of us who actually live in small towns or rural areas see that the poor didn’t go away when welfare as we know it went away. They just sunk a little more out of sight. I agree that Obama is a centrist, not my cup of orange juice, needless to say, but he actually trusted the American public to understand just how they have been manipulated by successive ReThug administrations & Congresses. I understand perfectly well what he is talking about, I see it every day in the small town I visit for coffee, oh damn, I just identified myself as a, regular person, at least according the to wealthy, gated community types who criticized Obama’s talk. Every small attempt, let’s see, to improve pedestrian & bicyclist access to The Big Lake up here is seen as some sort of Communist attempt to take land from a holy entrepreneur who has a “some day, maybe plan". It’s no different here than in PA. I came to the conclusion that people will respond to leadership that doesn’t bullshit them. Crap, I suppose I better watch my back too, given Sen. Clinton’s hunting skills. Why does she even bring shit like that up? Given that she doesn’t hunt every goddamn day during ruffed grouse/woodcock season, I wouldn’t want to be hunting next to her no matter how much ten-mile orange she was wearing.

[Added for this blog.] Full disclosure: I didn't hunt every day during bird season for the last couple of years, but just to prove that I'm even more of a regular guy, I have hunted every day in year's past. The not hunting as much recently probably relates to my excess 40 pounds.

Getting Used To Airports

The Twins are finding out about airports at an early age. They are responding appropriately.

Abe Osheroff, R.I.P.

Another American patriot gone.
Mr. Osheroff's last speech was in San Francisco on March 30, when he spoke from a wheelchair at the unveiling of a monument to the 3,000 American volunteers in the first against Franco in what came to be called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Nine hundred were killed.

The Result Of Too Long Presidential Campaigns In America

More & more crap comes out. I suppose some believe it's a good thing, but right now I believe this is much worse than Sen. Obama's truthful words about how the ReThugs have manipulated the working class & the working poor in "small communities". Most of those criticizing Sen. Obama have probably never been poor & the smallest town they have lived in was the newest gated community. They must keep out the bitter riff-raff after all. First, an intelligent (yes, I know, an elitist term) take on Sen. Obama's comments:
After months of hearing that the Obama campaign has no substance, you might think these upscale Rushbelt commentators would welcome Obama's bold, public analysis of how Republicans bamboozle poorer voters. They themselves talk about this sort of thing endlessly in their media control towers; were they serious about what they say, they would be delighted to see the conversation go, so to speak, mainstream and into the streets.
& now this about President Clinton's ties to a Chinese company that is, well, uh, not helpful:
But her [Sen. Clinton; ed.] recent stern comments on China's internal crackdown collide with former President Bill Clinton's fundraising relationship with a Chinese Internet company accused of collaborating with the mainland government's censorship of the Web. Last month, the firm, Alibaba Inc., carried a government-issued "most wanted" posting on its Yahoo China homepage, urging viewers to provide information on Tibetan activists suspected of stirring recent riots.
Now, loyal four readers, which is worse - Sen. Obama actually telling the truth, or President Clinton attempting to keep his hands clean by renaming a speaking fee to a donation to his foundation?

They Have The Best Interests Of Sick People At Heart

Uh, no. These bastard pharmaceutical firms, like most corporations in a capitalistic system, only care about profits & the compensation of their top executives. I believe that we not only need a single payer health care system, we need a government that supports drug research that is completely separate from profits. Otherwise, people will continue to die or be injured for the benefit of shareholders. Merck & Schering-Plough are no friends of the American people, or the people of this world.

Boo-Fucking-Hoo

No tears being shed around here for this anti-American bunch of losers. I hope they eat each other for lunch. In fact, I'd subscribe to a Direct TV pay-per-view program to see it. Yes, I think I might pay $1.99 to see such a fiasco.
Although the organization was founded by a coterie of prominent conservative donors last year, the roughly $30 million the group has spent so far has come almost entirely from the casino mogul Sheldon G. Adelson, the chairman and chief executive of the Sands Corporation, who was recently listed as the third-richest person in the country by Forbes magazine.

Mr. Adelson has insisted on parceling out his money project by project, as opposed to setting an overall budget, limiting the group’s ability to plan and be nimble, the Republican operatives said. Mr. Adelson, who has a reputation for being combative, has rejected almost all of the staff’s proposals that have been brought to him, leaving the organization moribund for long stretches, the operatives said.

“What has happened here is pretty much you had a single donor who essentially dictates the way things occur or do not occur,” said one of the Republican operatives.

See, this right wing attack group is representative of a broad swath of Americans, see, many donors contributed to its treasury, see, see?

It's Done

I have been working on building a easel for The Twins during the recovery & rehabilitation period after my shoulder surgery & the easel is finally done. Yay. Please note Lucy Mae's angry grass on the chalkboard side of the easel. I feel the power of her artistic genius flowing over me right through the camera lens & computer screen. Support The Troops?

Not under Chimp-In-Chief Bu$hCo in charge. What a bunch of dicks. I will say it one more time to all the veterans out there, it is the Democrats that will take care of you & have taken care of you. It's time to take your life seriously.
A new report Thursday reveals that Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake told two Democratic senators his department will not help injured veterans register to vote before the 2008 election.
Heckuva appointment there, Bushie.

Thanks, Among Others, China & The United Nations

Awful, just awful. It's disheartening to read this. I'm not sure I will watch the documentary tonight, it sounds horrible, yet I have complete trust in the filmmaker & her movie. I'm just not sure that watching it will make me any less furious at what is happening. I'm just tired of the horror I've seen in my life. From watching Jack Ruby murder Lee Harvey Oswald live on a black & white teevee, to Boom Boom Mancini punch Duk Koo Kim to death, again, on the teevee. There were the body counts on the night news during the Vietnam war, the dogs in Selma, the wrecked families after Reagun fired all the air traffic controllers. & of course, the Nintendo war of Bu$hCo I, the state murder in America (in the name of the law!). I work with kids who have been, for varying reasons, removed from the pubic school system. As you can imagine, many of them have a rough life, & I used to think, being the good, knee-jerk liberal that I am, if only I could take them home. I overcame that urge, but still, I feel helpless in thinking about these women in Africa. I write letters, of course, send money to make sure that women in this country won't suffer the same fate. Although that is something that hasn't completely happened yet. It's just tough, but I would urge my loyal four readers to watch it & I will watch it as well. It will be hard, but it has to be done.

Here's a poem by Carolyn Forche.
The Colonel

What you have heard is true. I was in his house.
His wife carried a tray of coffee and sugar. His
daughter filed her nails, his son went out for the
night. There were daily papers, pet dogs, a pistol
on the cushion beside him. The moon swung bare on
its black cord over the house. On the television
was a cop show. It was in English. Broken bottles
were embedded in the walls around the house to
scoop the kneecaps from a man's legs or cut his
hands to lace. On the windows there were gratings
like those in liquor stores. We had dinner, rack of
lamb, good wine, a gold bell was on the table for
calling the maid. The maid brought green mangoes,
salt, a type of bread. I was asked how I enjoyed
the country. There was a brief commercial in
Spanish. His wife took everything away. There was
some talk of how difficult it had become to govern.
The parrot said hello on the terrace. The colonel
told it to shut up, and pushed himself from the
table. My friend said to me with his eyes: say
nothing. The colonel returned with a sack used to
bring groceries home. He spilled many human ears on
the table. They were like dried peach halves. There
is no other way to say this. He took one of them in
his hands, shook it in our faces, dropped it into a
water glass. It came alive there. I am tired of
fooling around he said. As for the rights of anyone,
tell your people they can go f--- themselves. He
swept the ears to the floor with his arm and held
the last of his wine in the air. Something for your
poetry, no? he said. Some of the ears on the floor
caught this scrap of his voice. Some of the ears on
the floor were pressed to the ground.

May 1978

& here's a YouTube of her reading the same poem.
