Sports Beat - Collegiate Stomping Division

The Badgers put a beat down, 59-10, on the University of South Dakota.  I watched most of the game & what struck me was the unWisco quarterback I saw playing in a Badgers' uniform.  This guy passes very well & he passes a lot.  If he can't find a receiver, he runs, & runs well.  & young Mr. Toon is keeping the family name a great one in Wisco football history.

Numbers UPDATE:
University of South Dakota - founded in 1862, 9,291 students.

University of Wisco-Madison - founded in 1848, 42,030 students.



I believe, however, that South Dakota has more pheasants than Wisco, as well as more rock-headed presidents, bad Badlands, Mountain Goats, Bison, Mule Deer, & this state is the only state without, yes, without a state-funded scholarship program. I'd make a snide comment, but I'll leave that to smarter people, like my loyal five (yes, 5!) readers.

Sports Beat -- Almost Lost Division -- But Finally 30-23

Way too close for comfort. But as they, whoever they are, say, a win is a win. I blame Mrs. coldH2O since she did not wear her newly purchased Mathews jersey (a Fleet Farm purchase), her hat & she did not bring her clean rally rag downstairs. Luckily, the Packers were able to overcome these errors & win the game.Full disclosure:  I didn't wear my hat either, but had the rally rag.  So there.

Sports Beat - College

The Badgers demolished Northern Illinois. I didn't get to watch the game, I blame the idiotic ESPN, but I did listen to it. I managed to extract quite a few hollylhock seeds while listening & seeing the occassional video feed. It seemed like a game to watch, given the performance of the Badger's QB, but what do I know? I don't have a Ph. D. in sports programming.

By far the biggest beneficiary of a move earlier this year to turn three dozen civil service jobs into political appointments is Cindy Archer, the one-time top aide to Gov. Scott Walker whose house was raided by the FBI last week.

Archer served as Walker's deputy administration secretary until last month, when she abruptly shifted into a job as legislative liaison at the Department of Children and Families. She is being paid $99,449 a year - $39,129 more than the $60,320 the last person to hold the job made.

The governor could funnel such a huge increase into the job because earlier this year Republicans who control the Legislature went along with his plan to give him more political appointments. The change allows department secretaries to go around the normal hiring process and name whomever they want as chief counsel, communications director and legislative liaison.

My emphases. Yep, it sucks to live in Wisco right now.

A few hundred people and several dozen Chinook salmon gathered near the Elwha Dam on Saturday to witness the beginning of the process to set the Elwha River free and restore five species of Pacific salmon to more than 70 miles of river and stream.
