Promising Research

Hopefully this country will get its head out of its ass someday & realize the value of openness, imagination, aesthetics, feelings, abstract ideas, and general broad-minedness.  & how come I don't live closer to John Hopkins?

OOO Smell That Smell

As usual, hypocrisy, thy name is Michelle Bachman. Oh, & let's throw the dead father under the tractor while we're at it.

"My father passed away two years ago," Marcus Bachmann said. "Any farm subsidy was his doing."

Well, Ms. Marvin Is Right, You Can't Cut Your Way To Prosperity

Apparently, however, Warroad, MN, is too far from Boner's home district or Wall St. to matter  much.

FULL DISCLOSURE:  Among a certain circle of friends, well, one, I'm known as Marvin.  Also, too, we installed two Marvin windows & a Marvin patio door a couple of years ago.  Clearly, we are going to add more when the money allows.

Bat-Shit Crazies Act Like Bat-Shit Crazies & It Is, Well, Bat-Shit Crazy

How sweet the pizza must taste tonight.

Sports Beat - Collegiate Stomping Division

The Badgers put a beat down, 59-10, on the University of South Dakota.  I watched most of the game & what struck me was the unWisco quarterback I saw playing in a Badgers' uniform.  This guy passes very well & he passes a lot.  If he can't find a receiver, he runs, & runs well.  & young Mr. Toon is keeping the family name a great one in Wisco football history.

Numbers UPDATE:
University of South Dakota - founded in 1862, 9,291 students.

University of Wisco-Madison - founded in 1848, 42,030 students.

I believe, however, that South Dakota has more pheasants than Wisco, as well as more rock-headed presidents, bad Badlands, Mountain Goats, Bison, Mule Deer, & this state is the only state without, yes, without a state-funded scholarship program. I'd make a snide comment, but I'll leave that to smarter people, like my loyal five (yes, 5!) readers.

Sports Beat -- Almost Lost Division -- But Finally 30-23

Way too close for comfort. But as they, whoever they are, say, a win is a win. I blame Mrs. coldH2O since she did not wear her newly purchased Mathews jersey (a Fleet Farm purchase), her hat & she did not bring her clean rally rag downstairs. Luckily, the Packers were able to overcome these errors & win the game.Full disclosure:  I didn't wear my hat either, but had the rally rag.  So there.

Sports Beat - College

The Badgers demolished Northern Illinois. I didn't get to watch the game, I blame the idiotic ESPN, but I did listen to it. I managed to extract quite a few hollylhock seeds while listening & seeing the occassional video feed. It seemed like a game to watch, given the performance of the Badger's QB, but what do I know? I don't have a Ph. D. in sports programming.

UPDATE:
Oh yeah, the score what 49-7.

Life In FitzWalkerstan

More corruption --

By far the biggest beneficiary of a move earlier this year to turn three dozen civil service jobs into political appointments is Cindy Archer, the one-time top aide to Gov. Scott Walker whose house was raided by the FBI last week.

Archer served as Walker's deputy administration secretary until last month, when she abruptly shifted into a job as legislative liaison at the Department of Children and Families. She is being paid $99,449 a year - $39,129 more than the $60,320 the last person to hold the job made.

The governor could funnel such a huge increase into the job because earlier this year Republicans who control the Legislature went along with his plan to give him more political appointments. The change allows department secretaries to go around the normal hiring process and name whomever they want as chief counsel, communications director and legislative liaison.

My emphases. Yep, it sucks to live in Wisco right now.

In An America Ruled By Despicable People, There Is This Wonderful Ray Of Sunshine & Free Water

& the fish are really going to love it.  One dam down, way too many to go, but this is a great start.  There is a cool visualization of what will be happening in the article, go watch it.  Thanks.

A few hundred people and several dozen Chinook salmon gathered near the Elwha Dam on Saturday to witness the beginning of the process to set the Elwha River free and restore five species of Pacific salmon to more than 70 miles of river and stream.
More here.

An emotional ceremony was marked by references to the spiritual and cultural importance to the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe of the removal of two dams from the Elwha River near Port Angeles.

More on the Elwha River restoration here.

Great pics here. Including some Chinook salmon still coming upriver as far as they can go.  They have been unable to pass this point for over a century.

Tammy Baldwin Is Running For The U.S. Senate - This Is A Really Good Thing

Here's Mark Pocan's statement on Ms. Baldwin's announcement:

Rep. Mark Pocan’s statement on Tammy Baldwin’s announcement MADISON -- Below is State Representative Mark Pocan's (D-Madison) statement on Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin's announcement that she will run for the United States Senate: “Tammy Baldwin is a proven fighter for Wisconsin's middle class and working families, and she will be a terrific champion for our shared values in the US Senate.  Over the course of the past two decades, I've had the pleasure to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Tammy, having served with her on the Dane County Board and holding her former seat in the State Assembly. “During her career, Tammy has demonstrated time and time again that she is a powerful advocate for the middle-class and our seniors. We've fought many of the same fights rooted in our deeply held belief that everyone deserves a voice in our government, not just those who can afford to buy one. “I've been proud to call Tammy my Assembly Representative, my Congresswoman and most importantly, my friend. I wish her all the best as she enters this next chapter in her life and political career.”
