Just Asking

I'm no economist, but I always wonder why the wealthy stock market types always get nervous when people actually get paid for the labor they do? As anyone who knows me clearly understands, I am worthless at math, but I don't understand how laying off 400 workers makes that company's stock go up, or when wages go up, stocks go down.

"A surprise jump in labor costs and ongoing concerns about the Middle East pushed stocks sharply lower Thursday, with small-cap and technology stocks bearing the brunt of the selling. The Dow Jones industrials dropped more than 100 points."
